A ceilidh is a traditional Scottish social event full of traditional folk music and a lot of dance. Because the dances are usually based on dancing in at least pairs, sometimes even bigger groups, the ceilidh is a great place to meet new people, too.

30th November is traditionally St Andrew’s Day. Here in Scotland, this is the day to celebrate Scottish culture and traditions as Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland. And what could be a better way to celebrate it than attending a ceilidh? Having this in mind, three Glaswegian sections of ESN – ESN UofG, ESN GCU and ESN Strathclyde cooperated to organise such event on Thursday, 30th November 2017 at the Strathlyde University Students’ Union.

The event was, as promised, full of lively dance, loads of fun and itchy feet at the end.

People started gathering at around 8 o’clock, which was the time of the beginning of the ceilidh, while the amazing Strath Ceilidh Band was preparing. There was some time to make use of our photo booth before the dancing started at 9pm. After it started though, it went on until 11.40 just with small breaks to catch our breaths and get something to drink, as ceilidh really makes you sweat.

During one of breaks we also announced the winner of the photo competition. Congratulations go to Giulianna Scaramuzzi with her beautiful photo of a typically dressed piper at one of the quadrangles of the main building of our university.
