Dear exchange and international students,

Dear followers of this page,

The situation of the COVID-19 spread changed drastically in the last few weeks, with 11th March being the day when WHO declared it a pandemic.

Now, this is the time to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation, but not to succumb to panic. Please follow this link to read the official statement of ESN regarding the outbreak.

There are 3 main points to remember.

  1. Please stay calm and follow only reliable sources of information, such as WHO, NHS, European Commission, University of Glasgow and your home universities and national authorities. There is much disinformation on Facebook these days, the articles about COVID-19 not being an exception. Stress only weakens your immune system, which is the only thing that can fight Coronavirus for now.

  2. On the other hand, be responsible. Although COVID-19 is not such a threat to our young, healthy bodies, we must think of the consequences those not so healthy amongst us might experience because of our actions. We know, this might seem like a nice time to discover Europe, when the flight tickets are cheap, and the university does not require you to be physically present in Glasgow anymore. But please, always consider possible threats not only to you but to everybody in your community. Therefore, we urge you not to travel unless it is absolutely necessary.

  3. As always, we are here to help you. If you feel overwhelmed, not sure what to do or you need any help, feel free to contact us. We will either try to help you ourselves or point you in the right direction.

Lastly, with great sorrow, we have to cancel our Environmental Pub Quiz, which was planned for Monday 16th March. The spread of the virus needs to be mitigated and we would like to contribute to that by our small part, i.e. avoiding many students to meet at the pub quiz. As we said previously, do not consider it as our section going into hiding. On the contrary, it is especially these times when we are prepared to support you more than ever.

So please, just stay calm, stay safe and stay responsible.

With best wishes,

ESN UofG
